A light that works in a single photo doesn’t necessarily work throughout a person’s day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be breathtaking for a minute, yet entirely unfit for someone to work in for eight hours, stay in for days during a hospital visit, or live in for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, “light-and-shadow aesthetics,” “emotional color lighting,” and immersive experiences are drawing increasing attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am not denying their value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the contrary\u2014beauty, pleasure, memory, and a sense of belonging are fundamental values that light should create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet we must ask: When visual impact becomes the entirety of design, is light ultimately serving people, or is it serving publicity?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

1 | Light That Is Meant to Be Seen vs. Light That Is Meant to Be Used<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Exhibitions, stages, commercial launches, and city festivals need to capture attention, create drama, and deliver moments of spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these contexts, strong contrasts, dynamic changes, and vivid colors all have legitimate value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But hospitals, schools, eldercare facilities, offices, and homes operate on a very different timescale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, light needs to be used over the long term. It must simultaneously consider whether people can see clearly, whether they feel comfortable, whether it disrupts daily rhythms, and whether it supports the activities taking place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Momentary visual impact and sustained usability are not the same design objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If lighting designed to generate a minute of attention is simply replicated in spaces meant for long-term use, aesthetics can become a burden on the people who inhabit them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

2 | Emotion Is Not a Color You Can Call Up at Will<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Color and the lighting environment can indeed influence arousal, preference, and subjective experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But human emotion is also shaped by cultural experience, personal memories, physical condition, the meaning of a space, social relationships, and the task at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red does not necessarily mean excitement, nor does blue necessarily bring calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same environment may feel healing to one person and oppressive to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without clearly defined populations, contexts, measurement methods, and reproducible evidence, claiming that a few colored lights can precisely regulate emotion is often scientifically unsupported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until a reproducible \u201clight\u2013emotion\u201d model<\/strong> has been established, much of what is called emotional colored lighting<\/em> may be more accurately described as atmospheric design<\/strong>, or as a design hypothesis concerning arousal and preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

3 | Aesthetics Are Not the Problem; Avoiding Responsibility Is<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

True aesthetics have never been merely about attracting attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They should also understand proportion, rhythm, light and shadow, material, time, and the way people move through and pause within a space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good lighting can be spectacular, but it can also be so quiet that it is barely noticed. It can shape a space while also knowing when to step back and let people take precedence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, criticizing \u201ctechnical spectacle\u201d<\/strong> is not a rejection of creativity. It is a reminder to designers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visual effects cannot replace visual comfort;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

media attention cannot replace long-term experience;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and personal expression cannot absolve designers of their responsibility to the people who use the space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 | Bringing Aesthetics into a Value Framework We Can Discuss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the design process, we can start by asking: Who does this light serve? How long will people stay? What feelings or behaviors is it intended to encourage? Could it cause glare, visual fatigue, disruption to circadian rhythms, or unnecessary energy consumption?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the space is in use, how will real-world feedback be collected?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aesthetics may not be fully captured by a single number, but they can still be understood more honestly through interviews, rating scales, behavioral observation, usage data, and long-term feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every light that captures attention is a light that serves people responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And light that truly serves people does not have to abandon beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
